Make Time to Take Time
Material Speculation - Lamassu (Artwork by Morehshin Allahyari)

Since 2016, Morehshin Allahyari has advanced the concept of digital colonialism to characterize the tendency for information technologies to be deployed in ways that reproduce colonial power relations. In her recent research, the artist has specifically focused on these colonial powers in relation to technologies such as 3D printers and 3D scanners, and their use or misuse in the construction of endangered or lost artifacts and the cultural heritage of the Middle East. In this talk, Morehshin Allahyari uses research-based art practice as a point of origin to delve into topics such as re-figuring, fabulation, digital colonialism, archiving and slowness with time.

Morehshin Allahyari is an artist, activist, writer, and educator. She was born and raised in Iran, and moved to the U.S.A. in 2007. Her work deals with the political, social, and cultural contradictions we face every day. She considers technology to be a philosophical toolset to reflect on objects, and as a poetic means to document our personal and collective lives and struggles in the 21st century. Morehshin is the co-author of The 3D Additivist Cookbook in collaboration with writer/artist Daniel Rourke.
